My dear Sarah

We did not meet in either my visits to NZ or during Mstt's many visits to Cervantes in Western Australia however he regaled many many stories of his joy and love for you and Alex and Emiliie.

Matt was such an important part of the BSS family and will be sorely missed as a business partner and dear friend.

I sit in Sydney airport on my way to Wellington for Mondays celebration of such an outstanding man and I simply remember the red wine, the cray fish and the stories in our many times in Perth.

Matthew was a wonderful friend and supporter of the Wellington College community, both as Head Prefect in 1972 and as a superb President of the Old Boys for many years. His vision and support was instrumental in the highly successful 150th celebrations in 2017. On a personal level, Matt was always unfailingly loyal and supportive to me during my 22 years as Headmaster. We had been friends together at St Kentigern School in Auckland from 1960-67 and it was wonderful to rekindle that friendship after Matt returned to Wellington after his highly successful career in the military. He will be missed deeply by the entire Wellington College community.
Much love to Sarah , Matt's immediate family and the wider Beattie whanau.

Dear Sarah and family. This is such sad news. Matt was such an outstanding guy and I have so many great memories of him from our time together at school when the family lived in Wadestown not far away from us. I understand it has been a long fight and hope that when the time came it was peaceful. I be there and hope to will see you on Monday. Love from me and mine
