O'BRIEN, Mary Theresa. It is with profound sadness we announce the death of our much-loved Mary O'Brien. Brilliant violinist and devoted teacher, adored aunt, sister, friend and inspiration to many. Mary passed away peacefully in Birkenhead, North Shore on Sunday 1 March 2026 aged 92 after a short illness. A Memorial concert to celebrate Mary's rich, adventurous life and passionate advocacy for music will be held at 2.00 pm in St Matthew's in the City Church, 132 Hobson St, Auckland CBD, on Sunday 8 March, International Women's Day. It was my great honour to have met Mary and spent time with her talking about violinists and music. She was an outstanding person who has left such an incredibly legacy in the violin world in New Zealand. Her legacy will live forever through her many students, generation after generation.
