Mary was an amazing person, talented, knowledgeable, supportive, dedicated and respected by the ece whanau. I remember the inspiration Mary bestowed on those who attended her workshops and training session. My first introduction to her was attending a Playcentre workshop at Taupiri on outdoor play, still remember the enjoyment, fun and learning. RIP Mary.

Hi ...many memories of mary. As a child my mum linda was a friend of hers...I think you sometimes babysat me and my brother matthew heather. Then when I was older I did the chrysalis course and then worked for chrysalis...I spent a lot of time with Susan who worked in the office....I remember mary as being a strong woman....your mum was a force of nature....determined visionary...a real loss to the community. I'm really sorry for the loss of your matriarch....sarah

Mary had a huge impact on the development of Early Childhood in New Zealand, with like minded people, she help set up and tutored the very first Early Childhood Training qualification, which was at the time Field-based training. The training nights were initially held at Lintotts childcare Centre in the 70s. She went on to tutor many people who became outstanding teachers/mentors and leaders in Early Childhood.
Mary was a strong supporter and participant in the development and management of Koha Tamariki , a bi-culture early childhood centre that was visionary for the time. She was also a strong and leading force within the Play= Centre movement.
Mary was a tutor / mentor for Te Tari Puna Ora O Aotearoa (the New Zealand Childcare Association), this is where she became our tutor. Mary was knowledgeable and had high expectations from us all. During our training we had many Marae stays, which at first were a little out of our comfort zones, however as time went on we grew more comfortable and we now thank her for those experiences as we can walk more comfortably between the two cultures.
Mary has written and co-authored many books In relation to education and she is a Life member of Te Rito Maioha (Early Childhood NZ), an honour bestowed for distinguished service to ECE.
Thank you Mary, for being our tutor, mentor and most of all friend
