I worked with Mark for many years in his capacity as Principal Investigator of the New Zealand World Mental Health Survey. I was the Director of the overal international initiative. We consisted of about 30 countries, each with a team of researchers working together to coke comparisons of various aspects of the epidemiology of menral disorders in our country compared to other countries around the world. Mark was much loved by everyone in the consortium. I don't think I ever saw him without a smile on his face. Always eager to collaborate. Always very supportive of younger people. I many times caled on him for asvice and guidance, which was always level-headed and helpful. We fell out of touch in recent years after he became ill, but I thought of him often. I fact, I was thinking fondly of his just the day before he died, with no knowledge of his illness, as we were planning our annual meeting and I was speaking to the current and new leader of the New Zealand team, who was the student of the student of Mark, who took over after Mark's retirement. I asked this young woman how Mark was doing and I discovered, much to my surprise, that she never knew Mark, as he had moved back to Australia before she came on to the scene. I told her it was more the pity because she missed out on meeting a wonderful man. And then 48 hours later I received news of Mark's death. A great loss at too early an age. My deepest condolences to Mark's family and the many others, who remember him fondly.

My condolences to Mark's family.
From Christchurch eventually to Tasmania Mark's name would crop up over the years.
Always a ready smile and a listening ear.
RIP Mark
