Marie SMITH Obituary

Dear Paul , Jonathan and Vanessa,
Sadly I could not attend Marie's funeral. She was a wonderful teaching colleague in the early sixties at Grafton School. She and Bill stayed with us in Rotorua in the early sixties and we visited them in Auckland but sadly in recent years we did not manage to reconnect. My husband ,Douglas, died in June of this year. I now live in Auckland. I would love to reconnect with Marie's children for a coffee in Pt. Chevalier if you care to email. We had the pleasure of getting married at Marie's home in Calgary St in 2002. It was the perfect setting and a special place for us. We will always remember Marie's wisdom and wealth of knowledge to help others. Always loved and never forgotten.

What an incredible, committed, wonderful, beautiful and funny person. Dear, dear Marie, mother to my dearest and most lovely friend who I love so much, Nessy. I will never forget sitting on my porch steps with you and your mum, watching the world go by, sipping a cold drink and giggling and laughing together. Such a solid, caring and kind soul Marie. I remember you so fondly and with smiles and chuckles and send all my love ,hugs, thoughts and condolences to you Nessy, Ash and all the family, from all of us here in Villa: Ruthie, Migs, Teo and Oli x x

What a valiant activist, what a great friend to refugees and asylum seekers and human rights generally. A stalwart of Amnesty International for decades and one who will be sadly missed. No surprises that I last caught up with Marie at a vigil for Gaza - as resolute as ever in being on the right and rights side of history. Rest easy Marie. Condolences to the Smith whanau for the loss of a wahine toa and matriarch.
