Dear relatives of Marianne,
Marianne's contribution I know principally through her very thorough history of the Duder family in New Zealand. This shows among other things how New Zealand pakeha have taken on some of the strengths of the native people of the country to which they are also now native as well. (Speaking as an anthropologist as well as a relative!) it shows for the whanau (or iwi) the descent from one waka (I hope my Maori remains just a little bit adequate!) and your definition of our turangawaewae. And, it has the same strengths because it is not only a record of the descent but a statement of pride and relationships within that descent.
Marianne's contribution included a statement on the many twins within the Duder extended family. This is something of which I can feel a real pride. I am a twin – with my brother Noel Harvey-Webb whom the Duder family including Marianne have shown a special care. And, I have 11-year old twins, girl and boy, who are a constant joy.
Marianne, I know, will live in your very lengthy and competent family memory. And, it is a measure of your loss in that the loss is less because of her contribution.
We would very much welcome visitors from the New Zealand section of the family to the novice (shipwrecked some 25 years ago!) Papua New Guinea section of the clan.
With our condolences and memories,

James Duder Macpherson

I'm so sorry to hear of Marianne's passing. My condolences go out to your family.
My first contact with Marianne came when I was about 20 years old. I was going to school in St.John's Newfoundland and had visited the Shipping Archives. I came across a letter that Marianne had sent them requesting information about the Duder's of Newfoundland. I wrote down her address and wrote to her, she was only to happy to share all the information she had on the Duder family and I was so excited when I recived all that information. Without her help I would have never known of all my family all over the world.
Thank you so much Marianne.
The Duder's have lost a great historian.
