Maria WYPYCH Obituary

WYPYCH, Maria . (nee Wegrzyn). Maria died peacefully on Friday, April 1, 2022, aged 97. Born in Ostrow, in the province of Lwow, Poland, on 16 March 1925. Maria arrived in New Zealand on the SS General Randall in 1944 and was the last surviving caregiver of the 733 Pahiatua Polish Refugee Children. She was the beloved wife of Jan (deceased), and kochana loved Mama and mother-in-law of Dorota and Dennis Gibbs, Kazimierz (Kaz) and Maya, Tadeusz (Ted) and Jan, Jozef (Joe) and Kathy, Piotr and Regina. Treasured Babcia of 19 grandchildren and Pra- Babcia of 20 great- grandchildren. Loved and respected elder sister and sister-in-law of Jozefa and Peter Berry (both deceased ), Jan (deceased) and Maria Wegrzyn, Wladyslawa and Hubert (deceased) Strack, Frania and Michael Quirk, Bronek Wegrzyn, and her nieces and nephews. Dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her many relatives in the Wypych, Wegrzyn and Majda clans scattered worldwide. Friend to many, and much valued and respected member of the Wellington Polish community. Maria's Requiem Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Britannia St, Petone, on Friday, April 8, 2022 at 11.00 am and thereafter at Taita Servicemen's Cemetery. To share Maria's love of flowers, friends and family are invited to wear a flower in some way. The Rosary will be recited in SS Peter and Paul's Church, Waterloo Lower Hutt on Thursday April 7, at 7pm. Maria's favourite charity was the Missionary Sisters of St Peter Claver to which donations can kindly be made to www.claveriansisters.com The family would like to thank the Staff and Caregivers at Woburn Enliven Rest Home for their wonderful care and friendship of Maria.
