I was heartbroken to read of the death of Miss Kearney in the Herald this morning. I missed the Saturday notice and read the Monday notice at 10.17 - too late to join her family in Devonport. Miss Kearney was the most inspiring teacher I ever had. Her love for her students was always evident and as an 11 year old, I knew that I was a cherished student. In 1967 Miss Kearney loaded her Form 1 class into a bus and we headed off for the most amazing one week adventure based in Putaruru with visits to a stud farm, Rotorua tourist sites, Kinleith paper mill, a log cutting operation, trout hatchery... the list went on and on. An absolute highlight of my school life and the same for many others.
I was able to catch up with Val when I lived in Devonport and a great memory was taking her to Alexandra Park with one of my sons to watch her horse race. RIP Miss Kearney, you made a difference to many young peoples lives.
With much love to Val's family, Christine Driffill McDonald
