She was a great humorous lady. I had the honor of taking over her course in classical Chinese at the University of Auckland in 1992.

To Margaret's Australian family,

It is with heartfelt sorrow that I hear of Margaret's death shortly after arriving back in Australia after spending 5 weeks in NZ looking after my elderly mother Jean (97). It was a delight for us both to speak with her on her 90th birthday and congratulate Margaret on achieving this milestone. At the time she told me of your surprise birthday visit and was thrilled that all her Oz family were there.

You will not know me however my family (the Walls family) from Christchurch have been long term friends of Margaret. We met Margaret through ours and her good friend Lesley Taylor. My brother Geoff lived in Auckland for many years and Margaret and Lesley would grace his table often particularly on Christmas Day, hence my eventually meeting Margaret on one of my visits home from Australia. The latter has now been my home for many years and I live in Alice Springs.

On meeting Margaret there was a mutual warmth and I was fascinated by her intellect and unique warmth. If living nearby I would have loved to have had her for my mentor. I did tell her this at one stage during our friendship. Each time I visited NZ I would travel toAuckland to see Lesley andMargaret, after Lesley's passing 2 years ago I kept my visits to Margaret as a priority. During my recent visit we spoke several times on the phone. She was I good spirits on her birthday expecting to return home to Grace Joel after feeling a lot better with her recovery.
It was a shock and with great sorry that Geoff phoned to tell me the news on my return to Alice. Margaret and I had had a great chat about the early explorer Stuart. I was to send her a copy of the story of his expeditions to her.

I will miss her wisdom, friendship and great kindness. Margaret was a special person of the kind rarely met in ones lifetime and I consider it a privilege to have known her.
