Born one-month apart our parents were neighbours. We played as children, our guitars made of junk from the wood pile. My very first friend. You excelled in everything and aspired greater heights than most - it all turned to gold. Haven't seen you in 37 years - travel well friend.

We played together as children - my very first friend. You excelled in everything, and aspired to greater heights than most - it all turned to gold. Haven't seen you in 37 years - maybe on the other side. Travel well friend.......

I knew Malcolm long, long ago and for a short period of time (1986?) when he graced me and my then partner/singing partner Steve with his presence on guitar during gigs around the South Island. He was such a lovely guy and though I was never in contact with him again, I always remembered him with great affection; as a kind person of integrity. I'm terribly saddened at his premature passing and am grateful for the opportunity to wish his loved ones my deepest condolences at this very sad time. With warm wishes, Annie Reeves (nee Rutherford).

With sincere condolences to the family and friends of Malcolm Black.
Malcolm Black participated in my book project about how distinguished and well-known New Zealanders like himself - along with other unsung heroes battling at the coalface- saw the future of New Zealand.

The interviews on cassette and submitted writings will be available online in due course.
If I may, I'd like to quote from Malcolm's interview, in his office at his then law practice, Sinclair Black:
"It's quite exciting feeling that you're playing a part in an infant industry that is coming of age. I feel that what I do makes a bit of difference in terms of those bands succeeding or failing. Also, I really like working with them, they're nice people as well....I know that we need to compete in a global economy. I believe that we can compete most effectively and have the best quality of life as a unique and slightly niche identity culture...I think that the aspects I alluded to before in terms of conservation, cultural identity, smart technology, are going to come from a sense of cooperation, basically a sense of community, which encapsulates selflessness, and morality."
Certainly one of the nicest and kindest individuals I have ever met.
Thank you, Malcolm. Your peace and goodness will shine on.
Adam Greenwell.

Dear Julia, Ruby, Awhina, Cilla and Martha,
My deepest sympathy to you all at this sad time of loss, but I'm sure you will also have great memories of Malcolm. You will not know me, but I went to school with Malcolm for 5 years and were friends.

I was fortunate to meet Malcolm and Julia last year. What an open and generous human he was. Enjoyed chewing the fat with him over life and death - thanks Malcolm and love to your beautiful family
