Simone, Nick, and family.

Lynne and I met on our first day at school. "I'm Lynne Bernadette Fleming," she said. I was impressed! Not many five year olds introduced themselves by their full name. I knew all about that 'cos I'd been to kindy! At seven, the craze was autograph books. The idea was you handed a notebook around, and asked your classmates to write a poem, a verse, or a witty saying to remember them by.
"Make new friends but keep the old,
one is silver,
and the other gold!" I wrote.
Lynne and I were athletes, who lined up at the starting line of life, waited for the gun, then took off on a lifelong race of new adventures. It was a joy and priviledge to share life with a treasured and trusted friend. Lynne and Myles are God-parents to our youngest son, Jonathan.
A few weeks before she died, I reminded Lynne of the verse, "Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold," and she grinned broadly, her blue eyes bright and said , "That's it Simone!" And as Lynne Bernadette Carroll would say, "And that's that story!"
P.S. The rose is Dublin Bay, a nod to our shared Irish roots.
