Lawrence PILLING Obituary

Seven of us met up in Waiouru Camp in January 1958 as the Kiwi contingent to travel to Canberra and join the RMC Duntroon class of 58-61. Laurie ("Pills") was our southern most member from Otago and brought with him a distinctive Scottish burr. He was a regular member of the Rugby First XV and was respected and admired by his fellow classmates. All Seven of us graduated in 1961 and Pills went on to complete a distinguished military career before becoming an extremely successful businessman and community leader. Laurie was a wonderful entrepreneur who I met at MIRINZ when he sought some advice on developing a meat product. We also linked up in Japan. A great, honest, straightforward guy to work with. I´m sorry to read of his passing. Condolences to his family.

As a fellow Duntroon cadet, I was run over by Laurie on the Rugby field - he was a steamrolling centre. He was an impeccable organiser of class reunions in NZ. I particularly remember his concern for me a few years ago when I was about to undergo surgery for cancer, and his more recent support for the writing and publishing our RMC class history.
