Having only just learned of Mr O'Neill's passing, may I offer my deepest sympathy to his Whanau as I fondly recall an intellegent, broad and fair minded 'thinker'.
He was a breath of fresh air on his arrival as an inspector to the smoggy and conservative atmosphere that was the Christchurch Police in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Always impeccably presented, considered, well spoken and respectful he was a glowing example to us young coppers. I am proud to have served under him.
Rest in peace Mr O'Neill, you deserved a century on this earth for your kindness alone.

The sergeant who recruited me in Whangarei in 1965 and who later was chief inspector when I was sergeant North Shore and later a solid supporter for my entry to parliament.
A good bloke who had the sagacity to invest outside the police.
My respects to Laurie and condolences to his family.
