In the early 1980s I was head of communications at one of largest business insurance brokerages and worked closely with Katherine while she was BI´s Editor. She was extremely knowledgable about the industry. She was as smart as the brokers at my company. She was tough but fair. May she RIP.

Kathryn was indeed a 'class act'. She built and then lead a fantastic team at Business Insurance / Crain's reporting on commercial insurance in a deep and instructive manner. She reached CEOs to individuals new to our industry. She was an inspiration to so many people. She was also a 'connector', and she brought the Association of Professional Women [APIW] organization & its networking / influence to our Chicago insurance industry. We are all grateful to have known, interacted with and been inspired by Kathryn. We also were happy for her continue to enjoy her life and sail away & enjoy the beauty of Auckland and their sheep farm. RIP.

Kathryn was incredible at networking. At an early point in our insurance careers we crossed paths. For many years we shared business and personal experiences. Her support and enthusiasm were invaluable. But mostly Kathryn was my good friend. I regret that we lost touch in the last few years. Distance and life changes. She was an
unforgettable person.

I was so saddened to learn about the passing of Kathryn. She was such a terrific person. I knew her for more than 20 years. We had a great relationship -- she in insurance publishing and me in insurance media relations. I'm so glad she had time to enjoy her time with Bill in New Zealand. She will be greatly missed.

I am at a lost for words. Kathryn was the greatest boss, mentor and friend. The team she put together at BI in the 80s was a dream team. Wonderful professionals, wonderful people bonded by a really amazing wonderful woman.
I am so lucky to have been a part of this world. Love you, Kathryn.

I met Kathryn in 1987 when she hired me as a reporter for Business Insurance. I was immediately impressed with her on so many levels I can't begin to list them. I soon learned that she had a knowledge of the insurance industry that no one else had. She was fearless, willing to take on some of the most powerful people in the industry. She could also be a quite demanding editor, which helped me understand how she built Business Insurance into the preeminent publication covering all aspects of risk management.
Kathryn taught me a lot about writing and the subjects BI covered. Yet she was not all business--she was warm and kind as well, and fond of cats and the Grateful Dead. I'll miss her as a friend and her style, wit and grace. My condolences to Bill, her family and all her countless friends.

Kathryn was a remarkable woman and businessperson. I was privileged to work with her as part of the editorial family at Business Insurance. Her leadership, among others', made BI the top publication in commercial insurance, risk management and employee benefits. Kathryn taught me so much, and I have so many fond memories. She had an uncanny knack for bringing people together and taking joy from whatever she was doing - she worked hard and played hard! Condolences to all Kathryn's family and friends, of which there are many. She touched a lot of lives. I am grateful to have counted her as a mentor and friend. We will never forget her.

Kathryn hired me as a reporter on Business Insurance in 1984. She was a wonderful manager - and friend. Kathryn had more vitality than anyone I´ve ever met. The world is a duller place without her.

Kathryn hired me twice: Right out of college and after I returned from a four-year stint at newspapers in Colorado. When I left in 1981, she bought an armoire from me to help me finance my move. Four years later, when I decided to return to Chicago, I contacted her to inquire about open positions at Crain, and she paid to fly me home over Thanksgiving so that I could see my father and attend a job interview. Then she hired me back, insisting that I start before year-end so that I would qualify for benefits sooner. She also invited me to her annual Christmas party, where she showed me that she still had my armoire, which she had converted into a wine cabinet. Though Kathryn was a hard boss, she had a soft side, and I wasn´t the only one she treated with such kindness. She really cared about her people. Over the years, she kept in touch with many of us, mostly through Christmas cards or the occasional email. I will miss her chatty Christmas letters in which she shared the highlights of her life in New Zealand. Although we haven´t worked together in more than 20 years, she was an exceptional role model whose influence I still feel to this day. She may have passed away, but her spirit will always remain among those whose lives she touched.

I am so saddened. Kathryn was brilliant on so many levels. One that may not get enough attention was the young crew of reporters, editors and assistants she masterfully assembled and expertly mentored at Business Insurance during the '80s and '90s, igniting the careers of many young business journalists.
Just as important as its work, Kathryn's impressive reporting team coalesced into a family who developed personal pconnections that have lasted for decades. It's a wonderfully endearing and enduring part of Kathryn's legacy, for which I'll always be grateful. My condolences to Bill and to Kathryn's and Bill's family and friends.

Kathryn was my boss at Business Insurance magazine for several years in the early 1980s. She was a dynamic leader and colleague. Not only was she passionate about her job, and an astoundingly hard worker, she also knew how to have a good time. She was fun! I recall roaming the streets of Hamilton, Bermuda with her when we were there on a reporting trip together. I lost touch with her after leaving the magazine, but I have fond memories. My condolences to her family.

I am so saddened by this news. Kathryn was brlliant on so many levels. One that may not get as much attention as it deserves was the incredible crew she crafted and mentored at Business Insurance during the '80s and '90s, igniting journalism careers for many of us. But not only was this group of reporters, editors and assistants so talented, they also coalesced into a family who to this day stays in contact.
