June was my "Almost Godmother". Her name was pencilled into my Baby Book because she was not officially allowed to be my real Godmother - she had not been baptised Church of England. A friend of my late parents for decades, she became my friend too when I revisited my NZ birthplace and got to know her in my middle age. I will always remember her keen mind, love of the arts, flowers, her garden and great sense of duty and decency. A proper lady. Sharing our memories of jumping into deep water ("bombers"), giggling like girls. She was a harbour swimmer, I had covered pools in chilly UK. I wondered why she had not answered my recent phone calls, until I found her obituary online this morning. I cannot express my sense of loss. It was such a gift getting to know her as a grown up. I loved our phone chats, her empathy and sensible advice. We met earlier this year and we had arranged to meet again next year. After all she has done herself and for others during her long life, may she rest in peace. I will always love my "Almost Godmother". My thoughts and prayers are with her family, who had the privilege of her company for so long. God bless.
