Julian RICHARDS Obituary

RICHARDS, Julian (Harry). Born 12 November 1933. Passed away peacefully at Northbridge Hospital on 10 June 2024. Much loved husband of Beryl. Loving father and father-law of Gay, Philip and Jane, grandpa of Ben and Lucy. Warmly remembered for his love of boats and the sea. His stories and his ability to fix anything deeply missed. Resting now. "And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over." (John Masefield) Family and friends are invited to gather for a celebration of Julian's life at 2pm on Saturday 15 June in The Pavilion at Northbridge. Many thanks to all staff and his many friends at Northbridge.

Sending thoughts and kindest regards to Beryl, Gay and Philip and family on the loss of Harry ... skipper of DEBONAIRE, (one of the Dunkirk Little Ships) and superb raconteur, who made the voyage from Sydney to Russell, Dec, 1967 unforgettable in my subsequent experience of ocean passages. Encouraged by a couple of days of flat seas and mild weather as we started out, Harry decided to get out his varnish brush and began work enthusiastically on the port bow. By the end of the day, in came a fresh headwind covering his work in salt spray! Have never forgotten the wry Harry comment ... will make sure I start on the quarter next time!

In my years of boatbuilding since I've greatly admired Harry's work and skills in his various builds and fixes of all things boating. A master tradesman.

Trusting now that Harry is forever sailing placid waters ... with the wind on the quarter!
