Julia McMAHON-O'HIGGINS Obituary

McMAHON-O'HIGGINS, Julia. Passed away May 24, 2025 in her 91st year, after a fall and a long, hard fought battle with dementia. Loved daughter of the late Dan and Gertrude McMahon, sister and friend of the late Tom McMahon, loved wife and soulmate of Maurice O'Higgins (deceased), loved Aunt of Lesley, Kathleen, Gillian and Dan. Julia was proud to be born in the Chatham Islands and spoke of an idyllic childhood. She was a survivor of the sinking of the Holmwood by Germans during WWII. Julia was respected by many for her work at the Law Library, University of Auckland, and in later life was admitted to the bar. A life well lived. Many thanks to Hutt Hospital Orthopaedic Ward staff who showed her so much respect and dignity during her last week. It was valued. Slan agus beannacht A private cremation has been held. I remember Julia when I was a toddler and she was visiting Nelson as a teenager. I loved her thick plaited hair! We have a photo taken at the Queens Gardens in Nelson with me and my sister June as a baby. Later years my husband Stephen and myself met JuliaandMaurice for lunch on several occasions in Auckland. She did not deserve the suffering of Dementia but fate doesn't choose. My last memory of her is when she was in care in New Plymouth and in her mind, she was in her happy place, the Chatham Islands. Rest In Peace Julia.
