Joseph Gillis, Sr. Obituary

Quietly and peacefully on Friday, August 5, 2011 Joseph Gillis, Sr. departed this earthly life. Joseph was a meat cutter at Safeway and Shoppers for twenty plus years each. He won several awards during his years as a meat cutter at both places of employment. He was a faithful and active member of the Greater Revelation Baptist church for many years. While at Greater Revelation Baptist Church he joined the senior choir and the usher board. After retiring in 2006, he enjoyed his many hobbies such as watching his favorite television shows--Walker, Texas Ranger, In the Heat of the Night, and huge old western classics. He was also a huge fan of the Washington Redskins. In addition to his many hobbies he also enjoyed being around his family and friends. Survivors: His four children Deborah, Joseph Jr., Stuart Gills and Damita Gillis-Moss; one brother Bernard (Florence) Gillis; two sisters-in-law Bertha Gillis and Maxine Hughes; nine grand children Katina, Joey, Aja, Jeanaile, Bridgette, Jonathan, Ayanna, Kevin and Dante; six great grand children; many nieces and nephews; a host of relatives and church members and friends. Proceeded in death by: His parents; his wife Betty; his son Wayne; his seven brothers Peter Paul, Jr., Morris, Carl, Leroy, Clifford, George, Lawrence and one sister Emma Swayne. Family will unite Tuesday, August 16th from 10 a.m. until time of service 11 a.m. at Greater Revelation Baptist Church, 7617 Allentown Road, Fort Washington, MD. Interment will immediately follow at MD Veterans Cemetery Cheltenham, MD.

To the family of Brother Joseph Gillis:

Mr. Gillis was truly a blessing to the Greater Revelation Church family. His willingness to assist in whatever way possible was greatly appreciated. He always had and warm smile and kind words for everyone. I will truly miss him. May God bless and keep your family during this time.
