I've just learned today that Joe has passed on. This is sad news. I worked at Babich in the mid-80s as a vineyard hand. I was as low down the pecking order as you can get and knew nothing about wine, but my enduring memory is of Joe hosting wine tastings one Friday each month, and asking everyone for their opinions and, when I gave mine, Joe treating it with the same respect he gave to those who knew what they were saying. That's where my love of wine began, and I thank Joe for opening that door. What a gentleman.

Such a true gentleman. Thank you Joe for everything you have done for me. I will cherish all of the great memories I have of you. Working with you in the winery and the many hours spent in the smoko room talking and playing pool. You taught me so much and without your help and guidance I would not be where I am today. You were such an amazing man and it was an honour to know you. I will miss you. Thoughts and love to the Babich family. Steve.

Henderson High School Past Pupils and Friends

January 20, 2022

For his achievements in the wine industry and the community, Joe was formally recognised in 2010 as a "notable" past pupil of Henderson High School, which he had attended in its early days. Joe retained an appreciation of the opportunities given to him by the school and was a key supporter of past pupils' events and activities. We will miss him.
