I'm very sorry to hear of Jon's passing and my thoughts are with Ray and the rest of Jon's family and friends.

I had been thinking recently of a wonderful experience I had in 1992 when I left Canada for a 2.5 year backpacking trip around the world. I did an online search which led me here to this sad news. One of the highlights of my time away was being in New Zealand and wanting to experience the world of "WWOOF"ing (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) which I had read about. Because I wasn't in the Queensland area for a very long time, Jon initially told me (kindly) over the phone that it was a bit more trouble than it was worth to train me on what needed to be done around the place but thanked me for the interest...and we left it at that. But, he later called the backpackers trying to find me as he seemed to understand my enthusiasm for the experience, even if it was to be short-lived and wanted to make that happen for me. I then spent a wonderful week with Jon and Ray helping out (mostly helping anyway...at least not getting too much in the way!).

32 years later, I still wear the silver ring that Ray had made that reminds me of that time and I remember a lovely week spent working, learning and enjoying Jon and Ray's wonderful company and hospitality.

This is a realy sad day. I only met Jon a few times when he was in Europe for skiing. We kept contact by Internet. So I am sad. I feel his husband and his hole family. Jon was a great man. Heinrich

John was a friend of mine from the late '70s when he often used to visit Dunedin, and since then we have had occasional contact. He was a gentleman and a decent and kind hearted friend. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Condolences to his family and friends.

Jon was one of the few people in Queenstown who I remember fondly from my childhood. I even remember his mother! Rest in peace.

Best love to the whanau at this time, from Brigid Lowry, and her son, Sam Field, who once spent a winter with John as a WOOFER. We both have good memories of a unique person.

So sorry to read of Jon's passing. He was one of life's characters.

My trips to Queenstown will not be the same without him - thankfully, I was able to catch-up with him at Xmas.
