I am sorry to learn of John´s passing, and my condolence to the family, friends and former colleagues. I briefly worked with him when he was British Consul General in Auckland and had the opportunity to come out to NZ twice where I was greeted with his warm Kiwi charm. I was also fortunate to be invited to his home where, Ingrid served lamb shanks washed down with some Kiwi fine wine. As a Londoner born and bred, I was taken back with John´s detailed knowledge of London, from the time when he was based in London, when he reminisces about visiting Colombia Road flower market, because he knew more this than I did, and I only lived twelve minutes away on foot and had only been there once. I was somewhat ashamed to have travelled literally to the other side of the world, only to find someone who knew more about one of my local markets than I did. This taught me a valuable lesson: to appreciate what is on your doorstep just as much as you would when travelling abroad.

To his American relatives, John was the exciting cousin! I have such great memories of my time spent with John in the far corners of the globe (from a North American perspective). From The Philippines to New Zealand & of course the U.S., our time together was limited but adventurous & fun. He had a passion for life & had already had a lifetime worth of experiences by the time he was diagnosed. I think we were onto something when we used to speak on the phone & John would tell me what tomorrow is like. Although on the opposite sides of the world, we think of our NZ family often. We feel helpless being so far away & wish we could be closer so we could offer more support & see you all more often. We love you Ingrid, Olivia, Simon & Family.

John will always be remembered as cheerful and optimistic, with just the right amount of grit. I was blessed to call him cousin! We loved the time we got to spend with him, just wish it had been more. Love to Ingrid, Olivia, Simon and all the family. All our best, The White's"

I only met John last year and hit it off with him straight away; stories of the military and diplomatic service in the early days were uncannily aligned! Great company, frank discussions and a dedication to Rotary. I will miss future opportunities to share a dram with you, and my heartfelt condolences to Ingrid and family.

Was in the same class as John at Hamilton East School, and Peachgrove Intermediate, he did suggest that I join the debating team at the Intermediate school, not so good for me, but a change! Bit too early for leaving, so sorry.

John was a incredible person with a power and passion for life. Professionally he paid attention to those around him and made then feel supported and special. As a friend he was a warm loving person always interested in you and your family, and remembered just about everything about you. I cherished meeting John and Ingrid in Manila in 1983 and then in the 1990's being my neighbour in Henre Bay, Auckland. Memories that will live on in my heart for the rest of my life. Staying in touch and being a true friend for the last 40 years is something special. My prayers and thoughts go out to Ingrid and your family. Rest in peace my friend. The passing of a great man.... a great soul... and a true Statesman!!! Cam Spencer, son of Neil and Pat Spencer
