Unfortunately I never got to meet him. My daughter Bella is Johns great great niece. Johns sister Robin was my little girls great grand mother. Ive also read a lot about the Elingamite dives. It was John who first discovered coins there. Im sorry I never got to meet him.. And sorry for your loss. Ant Stead.

John Pettit was an outstanding Chairman of the Auckland Regional Parks Committee who was committed to protecting the parks' natural environments, flora and fauna, and especially marine habitats. His lasting legacy is an enhanced quality of life for all Aucklanders.
Farewell to the great Elingamite treasure hunter who inspired New Zealanders to get out there and dive!

John was a marvelous man and a great Kawau playmate...along with Shirley. He was a man with a richness of experience and interests and skils that were amazingly broad. Shirley's grace and elegance made for a fitting partnership.

So sorry Shirley. John was an interesting & interested man. We remember trips on Xanadu diving for scallops & long talks after wharf meetings. John gave us a tiny Elk fern about 15 years ago, Whenever we spot it at our Kawau bach we talk of John.

From the moment we bought on Kawau Island, John and Shirley became firm and treasured friends. A King Bromeliad, which is still going strong, was John´s gift to us. We will smile everytime we look at this wonderful specimen and think of John. At peace now John and lots of love to the beautiful Shirley. xx

On behalf of the (late) Roger, (late) Barbara, and Stephen Watkins, we extend our condolences to the family. Having met via the NZNA, this blossomed into a friendship, which included some amazing adventures aboard the Xanadau, which will be cherished forever. Rest in peace dear friend.
