Today was a moment of disbelief to hear that John passed away...a beautiful vibrant warm loving man that I got to know not only as his hairstylist for many years but for his drawing personality that just couldn't help want to make you smile and keep on smiling. My true heart goes to you Jonathan for being a wonderful soul mate to another wonderful man...ride peacefully in angels arms John...Katrina Bassett

Belated condolences Jonathon and the wider McHugh family. I haven't seen you for a long time, but often meant to as I passed along Lake Road. It just goes to show that when we think of these things we should do them. John was a lovely man and will be sorely missed.

We would like to express our heartfelt sympathy and thoughts to Jonathon and the McHugh Family. We have known John for nearly 30 years and always felt so welcome whenever we visited McHugh's. It would always be a warm and such a friendly voice calling out as we arrived, "How are the Perry's today?" John even helped to pick my father off the pavement outside the front entrance of McHugh's when Dad fell due to his brain tumour. We had so many Christmas, Mother's Day & lunches with John. We always looked forward to our catch-ups.
It is so sad and hard to believe we will not see or hear his voice again. Take care Jonathan...are thoughts and love are with you.

I am somewhat speechless at learning of the sad passing of John McHugh earlier today. My heart filled thoughts to Johns family, friends, co workers and to Jonathan, his forever faithful partner in crime. I'm sure not only will the local people of Devonport but those from further a field, will certainly miss your kindness and gentle nature that you brought into this world. It has been a pleasure knowing you and working with you over the many many years.
John you will be sadly missed..but not forgotten

Taken far too soon. John, your name and face are inextricably linked with memories of my youth on Cheltenham Beach. I and several from my generation at TGS (such as the late Robert Bishop) spent time in and around McHugh's attending functions and/or as staff throughout the years; and McHugh's was always my family's first choice when the wider clan returned to Devonport to reunite. I will fondly remember our last conversation when you and I sat on the grass outside the library in the sun a couple of years ago and laughed ourselves stupid over some of those times. Though it doesn't seem right that I shan't be seeing you round Cheltenham again in person, you will always remain there in my mind's eye. My condolences to Jonathan and all your loved ones and RIP. Your quick wit, cheeky smile, your passion for your business. You are certainly going to be missed, but most of all remembered! McHughs of Cheltenham will not be the same without it's namesake, but no doubt will endure with it's fine cuisine and amazing views! My condolences to the families. I enjoyed my chats on the post run and also loved being spoilt when dining there. John would always make me feel special! Thanks from Postie Marie

I was very upset to hear about this this morning from a colleague at work in Central city. My deepest sympathy to Johnathon at this difficult time. My experience of John, I always remember John being very curious about the after life... We were all good friends including for a time a Catholic minister (a kiwi chap) from Peru who John often interrogated regarding religion. Then John met Johnathon...and he never looked back. My heart goes out to Johnathon and all his family. I am just so sad tonight...I am not able to say goodbye to you John. YOU touched the lives of so many people ALL OF WHICH I had no idea knew you...Gosh I will always remember your passion to bring the Cin Cin crowd over to Devonport. Let all your dreams now come true !

After many pleasant years of working for you all those years ago @ McHughs of Cheltenham and Duders of Devonport, I am so saddened by the news of your passing and my heart goes out to Jonathan who now has to begin life again without his very best mate. McHUGH, John. My darling John. Wow, what an amazing roller-coaster this last week and a bit has been. I am writing this to you from your favourite place - looking out to the harbour, at home, at Hampton Beach House. You stay as long as you want to but, before you fly away to Heaven let me say to you - all you need is love. I'll write again soon, or can I get Heaven's number to text you. You know how much I love you. Jonathan.
