John McCannel Obituary

John Andrew McCannel passed away on April 1, 2025, with his children, Devan and Mia; his children-in-law, Ania and Luc; and his grandchildren, Dax and Leo, by his side. He left them as he had lived: with the unwavering knowledge that he loved them.

John found true joy in seeing others succeed, and he went out of his way to support that success. He empowered his kids to live their lives knowing he'd always be there for them, no matter when or where. Whether it was a long drive, a rainy soccer game, or a never-ending gymnastics meet, he was there. Always.

His interests were wide-ranging and unique, and he never missed a chance to share a quirky saying or create a clever nickname. He'll be remembered as a steadfast fan of the Boston Bruins and Liverpool FC, husband to Mary for 40 years, lifelong friend to brother-in-law Phil, son to Ted and Denise and brother to Alan, a lover of all music from the Gypsy Kings to Led Zeppelin, a marathoner and motorcyclist, an amazing driver, always taking the scenic route, and much more, and as the formidable "cheesehead" from the rinks of Manitoba.

John dedicated 40 years of his talents and compassion to RBC, where he was not only a trusted professional but a valued partner and friend to many in the business community.

He had the grit and wit of a Brit, the palate of an honorary Italian, and the heart of an endlessly loving father. He'll be forever missed and remembered.

My sincere condolences to John´s family, Mary, Mia and Devan. I worked with John at RBC on the Commercial floor for a number of years and remembered how he spoke of you all with such love and joy. John was a true professional who always put his clients first. He had a huge passion for supporting the tech sector in Victoria and made a difference in the community. Rest in peace John.

I was saddened to read of John's passing. While I worked in Retail Banking, I crossed paths with John several times over the years, especially on meetings on the '2nd floor'. John was a kind and gentle person and I met his Dad in later years when he resided at the same Independent Living as my Mom. Pat Hannah

I am sadden to hear of John's passing. Mia and Devan were just children when we started to work together. You could hear the love in his voice when he talked about them. John was the nicest and kindest gentleman. It was truly a pleasure to work with him. RIP John. I will miss you.

It is with a very heavy heart to hear of John´s passing, he was a friend first and foremost and then a co- worker. He had the upmost respect and love for his family and spoke with a smile when he mentioned Mia and Devan. I spoke with him in March and his grandchildren made him so happy! I will miss you my friend, you truly are one in a million, I am so blessed to have known you. Sherry

We were shocked and saddened to learn of John's passing. I was honoured to work with John over many years. First as young bankers we mentored a Junior Achievement team in Winnipeg. Then as not so young bankers we worked together here in Victoria for over a decade. John was the consummate professional and a pleasure to work with. What I do remember most is John's frequent mention of his love and pride in his family - clearly the anchor in his life. Rest in peace John.
