Just seen this notice. John was a great mentor to me and guided me and Jenny through a tough time in our life. I had the utmost respect for this man. We continued to keep in touch after I left the AMP and Pauline and John visited us in Tauranga. I still quote him today - "you never drive down the road looking in the rear view mirror". A lovely man and great leader of people!

Sorry to hear off the passing of my original boss JCI who employed me straight out of Viard college back in 1978 and this act of his kindness gave me a good career in Insurance for a good 25 years. He was a good leader who cared and always a gentleman. Sorry that I am year late in hearing this but he had a full life. I can always remember Plan your work and work your Plan which is something that John did do. Please pass my belated wishes on to his family especially Peter. I can even remember John replying back to my congratulations to him and Pauline on their 50 years of marriage which unfortunately is a huge achievement in this day and age. God bless a faithful servant.

I have only just heard of John's death.

John and Pauline were dear friends who picked me up when I arrived in Wellington, knowing no one and quite alone. ( I remember well seeing him for the first time in the ante room of the AMP Board room as we waited to be summoned to account for ourselves!)

Over the next few years they became friends of my family and he and I worked together. After we left Wellington we remained in contact and were able to meet and catch up from time to time. When in Sydney he and Pauline would have lunch with us at home and we could catch up on family news. There was a period when both really were part of my family's life.

I had not been in contact since Christmas but with an election coming I new I needed to catch up. I spent a memorable election night with he and Pauline and friends at Taupo in the early 1990s.

I shall miss him. the world is poorer without him.

Dear Irwin family,
My love and thoughts are with you at this time when we are all grieving this great loss. My words cannot sum up all of JCI´s strengths of character, however I will remember the fun and spark of energy that he brought to any occasion. All my love, Kristen

My condolences to the whole Irwin family.
Mr Irwin (John) made a life long impression on me as a teenager. His intellect, wit and very clear position on 'standards and behaviour' have stayed with me always.
He was a successful businessman, committed to the community, an ardent National Party supporter and most of all a loving family man.
He will be greatly missed.

21 years ago today as MC at our wedding, John raised his glass to Andrew and I. It feels very fitting that we shall do the same for him and Pauline tonight.
Go well my birthday buddy

John was a person whom within minutes would become someone not easily forgotten. Others have mentioned is ready smile, genuine interest in what we have been up to and always willing to help. He dropped into our Tawa Rotary book fair last October with boxes of his and Paulines books to donate to our sale. A fellow Jaycee, Rotarian, business colleague and most of all a loyal friend. We remember with smiles the times we shared with John and Pauline. Rest in Peace my friend.

John was always fun to be with, a great mentor, his humour, highly respected by work and service club colleagues for his leadership and friendship. Warm memories of social times together with John and Pauline in Tawa through Jaycee and later in Rotary.
With heartfelt thoughts to all the family on the passing of a great guy.

I was fortunate to have had John as a friend introduced through Rotorua Jaycee. These are the most memorable days of my life. John was a great leader and made us newbies to the city friends. My deepest condolences to the family with the loss of a great guy

The most fun fellow at any gathering, and there were so many wonderful events all together. We remember Uncle John's bright eyes, big laugh, huge smile, and his being so thrilled just to be there and having a marvellous conversation, peppered with roars of laughter and offers of food and drink in abundance! Great memories cherished forever of a lovely, sweet person, much loved brother and brother-in-law to our Dad and Mum, an absolute loyal trooper, John will be so missed by many. I write this sending our love and kindest thoughts, on behalf of the big bunch of Irwins from Pukekohe: Mick (youngest brother), Jeannette (sister in law), and nephews and nieces: Paul, Bernard, Michelle, Janean, Annette and David.

John was a great contributor to Jaycee and also to the Jaycee Senate and was a great guy. He will be sadly missed by those who knew him but he made a great contribution to the organisation that did so much for young men
