Coaches touch so many lives and yet receive little acknowledgement. John was a 'coach' at work too - I met him at Standfast in the 1970s and developed a healthy respect for his knowledge of the rag trade and the personalities within it.
His enthusiasm for basketball was matched by his loyalty to his friends and a willingness to offer help and advice. He loved many sports and his instincts were always on the button. We maintained a happy relationship over the years and I remember his fond references to many of those whose names appear on these pages.
Such a huge loss to his family and friends.

My sincere condolences to John's family.
I have many happy memories of helping John at a couple of coaching clinics in the sixties and learning a thing or two myself. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

On behalf of Harbour Basketball I extend sincere condolences to Johns family. I remember well the passion that John brought to the sport as coach of both the NZ Mens team, and later on the North Harbour team. I also remember your honest input when we served together on the Auckland Mens executive in times of rapid growth of the sport. John you served the sport well. RIP.

I wish to tender my deepest sympathy to John's family on his paaaing on from this life.
I managed the New Zealand Men's basketball with John as the Coach in the late 1960's and remember him as a person who kept himself very fit. We had a good relationhip and I have often wondered where he was now.
Sleep well John.

HINTON, John. Passed away on March 7, 2012. We are really going to miss you However we will never forget how well you handled Sleepy Fox on a wet track, and yes Feeney did give 3 kicks. In our memories you always had our silent and vocal admiration. Lyn Russell.
