John GLACKIN Obituary

I just learnt of Mr. Glackin´s passing at a Westlake Boys´ Reunion in Melbourne. I´m saddened to hear the news as I remember just how much impact he had on me. Mr Glackin delivered the Social Studies syllabus with wit, a sharp intellect and plenty of humour.

`Mr. Glackin can I go to the bathroom?´

He would reply with a cheeky smile: `I´m not sure...can you?´

Russ taught me 6th form history at Christchurch Boys'in 1968. He along with D.JGraham, G.Ash and Colin McIntosh showed me that good teaching was all about building relationships. A kind and gentle man.

Dear Margaret and family, I was saddened to hear of the passing of Russ. It brought back great memories of our time at Christchurch Boys' High School both in the classroom and on the sports field. My condolences to you and the family.

Our son thought Russell a brilliant teacher who fostered his interest in history at school and who was a very worthwhile human being. We share his feelings.

A wonderful and inspirational teacher, thank you Mr Glackin. Your lessons elevated history and social studies into the complex tapestries of humanity, in all its raw glory and gore.
