I used to go to the pro wrestling in Wellington as a kid and John was my idol. Wrestlers were always cast as good guys or villains but it was clear John was a genuinely good man in the ring and out of it. That fact was underscored by his great work for at-risk youth later in life. RIP, John, I won't forget you.

The Andrews Family

Today we learned of the passing of John da Silva a legend in NZ history. We knew him as Uncle John. His father as Uncle Ding. His connection to our mother and then our father was a part of our lives when growing up which we will never forget. The inspiration you were and the love you extended to us when we were growing up we will cherish. When you attended our family marriage ceremonies and shared your words of wisdom and congratulations. We send our aroha to the family at this time and grieve with them in your passing. We know that both our mother and father if alive would grieve with your family also. It is a sad time to mourn such a legend who gave so much to this Nation in so many ways. Arohanui Uncle John. RIP. Will always remember you with love from the Andrews family.
