It is with great sadness that I learnt of John's sudden passing and I regret I was unaware of the memorial service held yesterday. I had known John for some 30 years, first as a journalist, then as manager of the NZ Tourism Bd publicity section and more recently as a freelance political commentator and travel writer. We kept in contact over the years with the odd lunch, the swapping of stories and general good friendship. My sincere condolences to Rosemary, Christopher and Eleanor and the wider family. John will be sadly missed.

I came to know John well in the 1990s when he provided valuable advice, over a number of years, following the establishment of EnergyDirect
Since then I have enjoyed his wide ranging media commentary, some of which I even agreed with
I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to his family

It came as a great shock and sadness hearing of John's sudden passing. I've known him for all of my career in politics and enjoyed his company greatly. When he was leading the TVNZ parliamentary office he was always a great competitor. I recall spending a lovely day with John and Rosemary at their home many years ago when they spent much of their time trying to control their dark haired toddler! There are many stories of John and his time in journalism which I would have dearly loved to have shared today with those who knew him but unfortunately commitments in Auckland prevent it. Deepest condolences to his lovely family. Barry Soper
