John was my history teacher when i was a student at Onslow College in Wellington. He was also my 1st XV rugby coach and manager. In 1972 we won the 1A Wellington title. I can still remember John on one occasion, when we were travelling in a bus to a game, receiving from John a personalised note that ended with 'tackle tackle tackle'. John was certainly fully committed in this role too. I met up with John through teaching early in the millenium and John came to my house on the north shore. We reminisced about teaching and our earlier days at Onslow. Thank you John, I will remember you.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John Bates. I first met John as a student at Reefton´s then Inangahua College. He was much loved and respected by all students and staff , and was also a valued member of our community during this time . John freely shared his amazing gifts and talents, as well as his vibrant personality with all those around him . It was a true joy to reconnect with John on his visits to Reefton in later years ...he certainly hadn´t lost any of the magic that was his true nature ! We still loved listening to his beautiful voice. Sincerest love and Sympathy to all those who mourn his passing ...well done Thy good and faithful servant .....Judi Crook Brisbane .
