Jaysankar SHAW Obituary
Shaw, Jaysankar Lal (Jay). Dr Jaysankar Lal Shaw, 84, died on 29 August 2025. Born in Kolkata, India on 9 January 1941. Dr J L Shaw received his PhD from the prestigious Rice University, Texas USA where he was a Fulbright and Rice scholar recipient. He completed his MA (1961) and BA (Hons 1959) from Calcutta University. Dr Shaw taught at the University of Alabama (1969-1970), University of Hawaii (1982-1985) and Victoria University of Wellington (1970-2015). He taught a range of courses on western philosophy and comparative philosophy, including Indian philosophy, Māori philosophy. He presented over 200 research papers and received funded invitations from over 130 institutions and universities. He was honoured with two Festschrifts. Dad was known for his kindness, generosity and love of knowledge. He is survived by his wife Shipra, daughter Natalie and granddaughter Maya. A service will be held at Victoria University of Wellington Maclaurin (LT101) on 21 September at 2pm.
