It was such a shock to see the death notice for Janis. She was a beautiful person with whom I had the pleasure of working with over the years - a sparkling, bright, treasured colleague and friend over many years. I´m sad that I can´t be there in person to pay tribute to Janis but I send my sincerest condolences to Janis´ family and to our mutual colleagues who mourn her passing from this life.

"A special person is like a rare gem, treasured for their unique sparkle."
Janis was such a gem. She was such an inspirational, clever, kind and fun person. I feel privileged & so grateful for the many years I had learning from her and working alongside her at AUT. I will treasure memories of her sense of fun, her laughter and smile.
My condolences to her loved ones, and especially to Aaron, Kate & family xx

Janis is an incredibly important figure in the history of AUT as a university. Her work as a leader, in the Pacific family study and her support of many emerging academics made a huge impact on so many levels. Thoughts are with her family

Janis was a dear colleague, mentor, and friend to me. We met at a conference in South Africa in 2005, and she brought this fresh little American upstart back to NZ with her. 18 years and 15 trips later, I´m deeply grateful for the beautiful world she opened up for me down under. My deepest condolences - she was very special.

She inspired me to be a better man with her patience, empathy and intellect but most of all her kindness.
