Janet MALCOLM Obituary

MALCOLM, Janet Diane (Diane) (nee Spense). Passed away on April 29, 2023. Aged 87. Treasured daughter of Constance and Jim Spense, and loved sister of Valerie, Dawn, Noel and Elaine (all deceased). Hugely loved mother and mother-in-law of Leanne and Phil, and Greg and Jenny. Adored Gran-Di of Joel, Ivor, Felix, Brahm and Nico. Former wife of Mervyn Malcolm. Our beautiful, stylish Disy passed away in Queenstown on Saturday April 29, with her children Greg and Leanne at her side. She bravely fought cancer in her last five weeks and was cared for lovingly by the incredible staff at the Whakatipu Care Home in Queenstown, where she'd moved two years ago after losing her sight. Di was renowned for her humour and huge laugh and she lived for her family. She adored her home in Whakatane, and the township and its people and is well remembered for her role as executive secretary for the Whakatane District Council where she served the community for 25 years. She was also a popular member of the Whakatane Golf Club. It is fitting that we return Mum to her place, so we are holding a service and celebration of her life at the Ohope Surf Club, 7 Mair Street, on Saturday the 13th May from 3pm. Refreshments at the club will follow. Everyone is welcome and we'd love to hear your stories and memories. Dress glam for Disy.

Oh dear Disy

My memories of you...
I remember you and I going to see an Australian movie in the 90's called Spider and Rose - I was in my 20's and you would have been in your 50's I suppose. I think we only had one glass of wine before we went but that was enough for us to have the giggles at the most inappropriate moments - well when I say giggles, I mean I probably giggled but I don't think you were capable of giggling - you would let out your loud, unmistakable laugh which would send me right off into fits of laughter and that in turn would send you off! I don't know how the other moviegoers felt but we had a GREAT time!

I remember your linen shirts and skirts and your pointy toed slides. The perfume you wore - Eternity by Calvin Klein (which I wear to this day) and I also remember the fact that you only had Egyptian cotton sheets on your bed - even in winter! None this flanelette business!
I remember you teaching me what a "chemise" was. Something every twenty-something young woman in the 90's should know!

Disy you will always make me smile and you have a special place in my heart

From one of your "girls"
