I am saddened to hear this news belatedly. I was privileged to know Jim from his Paris days in the early 90's. We taught together at Paris University and later started our training company Jurislangues. Above all I will always remember a beautiful man who, perhaps without realising it, eventually taught me much about Life. Quite an incredible and varied journey, one which no doubt carries on elsewhere.

Vale Jim.

Dear Helen and family.

We are extremely saddened to hear of Jim's passing, but uplifted to know about all the good he did throughout his life, much of it described in these comments.

Although Kate and I only knew him for a short while, we immediately bonded and loved his approachable, friendly and kind personality.

Thank you for being our friend.

Memories of Tahiti, when you welcomed and supported us after our Mururoa anti nuclear test protest in 1974.. You stood up then already for years as writer, editor & publiceer of the only English publication in French Polynesia, against the military might of France and other nuclear powers. Your sense of true human rights for all & your support for the oppressed spoke volumes.... We met only ones or twice in Auckland since those heady days in Papeete.... Now i wish we could share an other glass of wine.... Ce la vie... , but cheers brother! Thanks for all you gave & did, not only then, but also in your great work in Auckland. My deepest condolences to your beloved ones.
RIP brother!

Jim

You were a welcome and vibrant addition to the staff of Davenports in Henderson in the late eighties. Little did we know then what you would go on to achieve on so many fronts - driven by the inner voice of justice and sweet reason.

Your friendship, your approachability and your love for people - we really did value.

'Promoted to glory' as the Sallies say means we can add an 'au revoir' to good bye. Sincere condolences to family all.

We were saddened to learn of Jim's passing. While we hadn't seen Jim for a few years, I do recall catching up with him at a family get together at my parent's house. I remember his larger than life figure, and his beaming smile. Our thoughts and very best wishes are with Joshua and James especially, and also with Fay, Bill and Sarah and their families. So sorry that we can't be there on Saturday.

Few probably know that Jim a recent arrival in Aotearoa was a pioneer in the peace movement sending boats to the Pacific to oppose French nuclear testing as a member of the Peace Media organisation set up by the late great Barry Mitcalfe.

As a fellow founder of that organisation long before Greenpeace had even been heard of in these parts and well before Rainbow Warrior I say thank you Warrior for freedom liberty and justice.

Others will talk of your later huge contribution union towards these values in other fields but let not the ideals of your youth be forgotten.

Dear friends and family of Jim,

I knew him well. We did poetry and art in the 1960's in upstate New York. We rediscovered one another and corresponded via email this year and I witnessed his great fortitude in the face of his illness. He wrote to me of his great love for his family.

A great poet, his work will live on in his final magnificent book.

I met Jim on my second trip to Aotearoa when we began to establish the Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Court. He was enthusiastic from the beginning of the project and served as the senior defense counsel for almost five years. Without the understanding of and support from defense attorneys, the Court would not be as successful as it could be. At his own expense, he and Helen came to a training conference in Washington, D.C. in order to improve the service to his clients. As time has gone on and after many trips to New Zealand, I am proud to say that a friendship grew between Jim and me. I will always treasure "Drug Court Poems" and my memories of him.
