My deepest sympathies go out to the Matijasevich family. Yaka was a pleasant, friendly and hard working lady. She always greeted Mum and I with a smile at the dally club. My late parents Ivan and Nedija Barbarich had fond memories of their visits at Campbell road and catching up with other friends and relatives. RiP

Jaka Matijasevich was my aunty, she was a strong willed and loving person. She was born on the Croatian island of Korcula, growing up in the village of Racisce. When the country was ravaged by war, she fled with her family by small boat to escape the Nazis. She spent two years in the El Shat refugee camp in Egypt before coming to New Zealand in 1946 where her family was reunited. Her and her husband Berislav ran a fish shop on Manukau Road and later, the Sunbeam fish shop on Broadway in Newmarket. She had great taste, was artistic trying her hands at painting by numbers and even cotton reel knitting rugs. She had custom furniture made, and her house was always immaculately decorated. My Aunty Jaka enjoyed graphic novels, and the Phantom was one of her favorites. In her later years, she loved to take an early morning walk around Cornwall Park. I spent several happy vacations at her home with my two cousins Ivan and Gerald on Campbell Road ,Green Lane. I cherish those memories, rest in peace, my dear Auntie Jaka. A life well lived.
