I enjoyed Ian's company for lunch one Sunday in Cairo in 1999 after his morning service at the Heliopolis church where he was ministering. I am sad to read today about his passing in 2018.

Dear Jenny, Meaghan, Sharlene and Michael, our sister Karyn Ford let us know and attended his funeral. We remember the times when you were in Lower Hutt, and took part in our marriage in August 1982. Thinking of his wise guidance and sermon at that time. Something we have reflected on many a time. Barbara and Graeme Ford

Dear Jenny and family,

What a blessing it was for us to enjoy a precious friendship with Ian McCleary when he served as pastor of our church in Dacca, Bangladesh. These were memorable years when we shared much more than our church work together. Our families all faced difficult challenges as we experienced the complexities of expatriates living and working in Bangladesh. How thankful we were to have experienced loving friendship, incredible nurturing and amazing joy with our soul-mates and dear friends, Ian and Jenny McCleary.

We were thankful for Meaghan, Charlene, and Michael who were also very precious to us. Our prayers are with you all as you grieve the loss of your very dear Dad.

So sorry not to make it to Ian's funeral. We talked on the phone not long ago and he was full of his usual good humour and optimism.

Ian's pastoring and teaching in Dhaka, Bangladesh were extremely important to our extended family - we are blessed by knowing him as a servant of Christ and warm, fun-loving friend! I wonder if he and Jim McKinley are at match-set in heaven?

Ian McCleary you were a breath of fresh air to me when I first met you way back in 1990 when I became a work colleague. Your supported me as I came to know my way in unfamiliar territory. I will treasure always our conversations, shared jokes, your curries, your cheeky smile, tennis score reports as you beat the young blokes!! Your energy showed no bounds even when you were poorly. The love you had for your precious family had no end. What a man, what a father, what a husband, what a story teller, and what a friend. My deep condolences to Jenny and family and closest friends at this moment of farewell.
