A veritable gentleman and a kind soul, Ian will be remembered fondly. I treasure my memories of travels with him and Pat.; we had so much fun. I knew Ian would be good value the first time I met him; his sense of humour shone through. I miss him.

Very sad to hear of Ian's passing. I worked with Ian at Takapuna Grammar School and he was always so supportive and a real gentleman. My son Marko was inspired by Ian as his history teacher and we will remember him as the best teacher and amazing human.

A man of rectitude, good humour with great fondness, tolerance and respect for the young people he taught. Ian was a good friend of us teachers in Performing Arts at TGS. He loved the performance work of the students and consistently commended their efforts. His approval and support meant a great deal to us and he sang wonderfully. Our condolences to Pat and family. He was a venerable colleague and an example to his colleagues.

Great memories of O Rorke Hall and our years at Uni in the sixties. We called you Lis always. You had an amazing sense of humour. Your impersonations of ORorkians walking through the tables to get dinner will never be forgotten- the shy, the awkward, the arrogant, the over confident, you had us all to a T Beautiful humour with no malice. Rest in peace dear Lis. You were a great friend.

Ian taught me History at Takapuna Grammar School in 1969. He was an inspirational teacher who brought the past alive, and who was a role model for me when I was teaching. He was a scholar and a gentleman whose charm, courtesy and wit made him a valued friend.
Historian, musician, raconteur and man of letters, Ian was a true Renaissance man.
I send love and deepest sympathy to Pat and all Ian's family in the loss of such a wonderful person.

Very sad to hear of Ian´s passing. He was a gentle teacher and a kind man. I loved his English lessons and his sense of humour. He too inspired me to become a teacher and a principal.
My condolences go to his family.

Ian was a great school and family friend to Graham Victor Young of Hamilton. He was also Godfather to Gregory James Young. Many Young family functions were either attended or officiated by Ian. Although a great piano player enjoyed by us all, one would class his attempts at golf amusing on a different scale. A gentleman at all times who will be sadly missed by our family.

Dearest Ian, thank you for the guidance and love you gave me both as a student and later as a teacher, over many years. You inspired me to become a teacher and now I am a principal. I think you would be proud! You were an exceptional human, giving so much to others, with a smile and love, but also the highest of expectations. Love always xx. Cindy Sullivan: student TGS 1976-1980, teacher TGS on and off over the years. Rest in peace you lovely man. Love and best wishes to you Pat and all of Ian's family.

Thank you, Ian, for your love of teaching and your love of all of us students whether you taught us or not.
