Ian FLETCHER Obituary

FLETCHER, Ian (Fletch) McDonald, AKA Poppa. Passed away peacefully on Thursday, 24th October 2013 in his home in Tauranga, surrounded by family. He was born on 24th January 1943 in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1953 he immigrated to New Zealand with his brothers Hector, Jim, Gordon, Neil and sisters Betty and Margaret and he settled in Te Aroha. In 1965 he married Christine Johnston, and had 2 sons, Derek and Shaun. Sadly Derek was taken in a car accident in 1986. They divorced in 2006, Christine later re-married Colin Nickel. They have maintained a very close friendship to the end. Ian was a very special man and touched the lives of everyone he met. He was extremely cheeky and loving, and always had a story or 2 to share. His home was open to everyone, with treats in the pantry, a cold beer in the fridge and a joke or story to be told. He is unforgettable and to say he will be greatly missed, is an understatement. Shaun along with his wife Kim and their 3 daughters, Olivia, Laura and Caprice, will miss him more than words could ever say. He will forever remain in their hearts. Ian's service will be held at the Olive Tree Cottage, 247 Joyce Road, Pyes Pa, Tauranga on Wednesday 30th October 2013 at 1.30pm. All are welcome to attend the service and join the family to share their memories together. Donations in lieu of flowers would be appreciated for the Waipuna Hospice, 43 Te Puna Station Rd, Tauranga. Communications to 57b Merivale Rd., Tauranga. Broadway Funeral Home (Matamata) FDANZ.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Ian. Our families met through our daughters in 1985 when they met Derek & Shaun. Sadly Derek was killed only a few months later, however we struck up a friendship from then on. Over the years we have met up for family celebrations for weddings, birthdays etc. Ian your sense of humour will always be remembered by us and I'm sure Derek will be there to meet you on your arrival at the Pearly Gates.....ciao per ora

We are very sad to hear about the passing of a very special man. Our 3 children were lucky to attend Pillans Point School while Ian was the headmaster there. They have all been told of his passing and are very saddened by the news, particularly our son Lewis (11) who enjoyed his whacky sense of humour and his warm, kind nature. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Ian's family and friends. Rest in Peace Ian and may you now enjoy endless fishing trips and cold beers! Lots of Love from, Malcolm, Sharon, Maddison, Aria and Lewis Blaikie
