Hugh was a generous host and responded willingly and graciously when Kuni Kaa Jenkins and I came to him to talk about the history of his beloved whenua. Our book `He Korero: Words Between Us´ benefited immeasurably from his knowledge and kindness. Nga mihi aroha ki a koe Raewyn, ki te whanau katoa hoki.

My family and I have been blessed to know Hugh and benefit from his presence and mana. We are neither Maori nor born kiwis, but Hugh made sure we never felt awkward or excluded from his world. Always quick to offer help, and shy to ask for it, Hugh´s generosity of time and wisdom was a great gift. He had a great sense of humour, and in just a few words could highlight the many ironies we live with. Kind heart, steady hand, insightful mind. We will greatly miss all that Hugh was.

An Elder, walks along the road where home is in sight
His Ancestors waiting to greet him as he follows the light
A strong hand helped to educate community and family
Respect Maori history and custom similarly
You wore your kindness quiet as the rain
Teaching with patience only time could lend
Your footprints will not fade from paths you did roam
Within the community and family hearts, your stories will be told
Let the sorrow blend with grateful waiata
For every moment, every cherished dream,
Your spirit in our family will belong.
Farewell, dear guide, teacher of the community and family
You will be greatly missed by so many
Rest in peace Hugh x
