Hugh was always a bubbly and supportive member of our standards development group. I used to love talking to Hugh between our meetings and catching up on all his crazy adventures. He will be missed.

I was sad to hear of Hugh´s recent death. I worked beside Hugh for 22 years in DSIR Applied Maths Division. Hugh managed the Operations Research Section from about 1968 to 1992; and the Section attracted dozens of OR graduates from Canterbury and Auckland Universities, plus from further afield. Hugh had a big influence on many of us. After leaving AMD, we dispersed everywhere to become OR managers, consultants, and academics. Hugh´s team worked on many projects including in the Liquid Fuels and Meat industries. Hugh also had a high public profile, writing on many topics such as Comalco prices and NZED capacity. In 1992 DSIR, MAF, FRI, etc. were reshaped into ten Crown Research Institutes, losing hundreds of scientists in the process. Applied Maths went into Industrial Research Ltd. But defunding continued and in 1996 Hugh left IRL to pursue other interests. However Hugh´s real love was always tramping and skiing, which seemed to fill his every weekend. He supported the Tararua Tramping Club, Federated Mountain Clubs, Deerstalkers Association and Outdoor Recreation NZ party, often as their spokesperson. And when the National Government overturned Labour´s Foreshore and Seabed Bill, Hugh joined the NZ First Party, becoming their scientific advisor, lobbyist and Parliamentary candidate. After a full and vigorous life, rest in peace Hugh.

Go in peace old friend. Thoroughly enjoyed our time together advocating for NZ Hunters and the environment. You have been a mighty tall tree in the forest for conservation of the NZ Estate.

Sorry to hear of Hugh's death. I appreciated my association with him during his time working for NZ Deerstalkers Assn, particularly his efforts to protect our rights as hunters to access public land especially with regard to Tenure Review. A true gentleman who contributed considerably to our New Zealand outdoors and was a pleasure to work with.
