Howard was a much valued and admired team-mate, and for some days my room-mate, during the New Zealand cross-country team tour to Germany for the world championships in 1977. Among other contributions, he taught us (all skinny pakeha) to perform the haka! My sympathies to his family on the loss of a courageous, talented and deeply loyal man, and a terrific athlete.
