I got in touch with Mrs. Honor Hurley in the early 1980s while researching the life of Jim Corbett, the slayer of man eating tigers in India, author and humanitarian who spent is final years in Nyeri, Kenya, at the Pa tu Cottage/ Outspan Hotel owned by Eric Sherbrooke Walker, father of Honor who also worked there in addition to escorting visitors to the famous Tree Tops, also owned by the Walkers. Honor knew Jim and his sister Maggie well. she volunteered to be a projectionist for Jim whenever he screened wildlife films. Although Jim Corbett died in 1955, his sister Maggie lived on till the end of 1963. Honor and Maggie got together and prepared an outline for Jim's biography. our correspondence lasted well into the mid 1990s. My book Under the Shadow of Man eaters: The Life & Legend of Jim Corbett was published in 1997 by the Jim Corbett Foundation of Canada, and in it I duly acknowledged the contributions of Honor's recollections of the Corbetts and the photographs she sent for publication. She was very patient and dedicated to her commitment. I only came to know of her passing today. When a friend of mine, Ed Newman and his wife Nora were visiting Auckland, in the early 2000, I asked them to look up for Honor to day hello which they did. The posted photograph shows Ed and Honor in a Restaurant having refreshments. Ed also passed away in 2009. My hearty condolences to Honor's family.
