Dear Harry's family,

Early in the year of 2015, my classmates and I were preparing for the upcoming mountain biking excursion. Aside from being briefed with standard information about the trip, part of our preparation was to practice riding on a mountain bike itself, for which we assembled on the ovals of Rostrevor College to do so. It was at this place I remember my house teacher Mr. Lucas walking up to me and one of my mates. Alongside him was a young man. An impressively tall young man who, at the time, made the shorter Mr. Lucas look almost miniature in comparison. Me and my friend exchanged glances what could this be about? Our house teacher, alongside the new guy, came to me and my friend specifically. With a deep breath, he explained his purpose here the guy besides him was a new kid in our year level, and, considering we were all to be in the same house, he wanted us to help him settle in. To take him under our wing, show him the ropes, help him comfortably integrate into the lifestyle of Rostrevor College.
The new guy introduced himself to us as Harry Ladd, and we shook hands.

Right from the beginning, I noticed a buoyancy about him. He was not nervous, he was not shy, he did not seem scared about beginning his life at Rostrevor College. Quite the contrary, he in fact had an infectious grin plastered across his face. With a cheery voice, a booming laugh, and one of the most welcoming personalities I've ever had the pleasure of encountering, Harry immediately cemented himself as one of the friendliest persons I had ever met, after just days of having known him. Though most new kids that enter Rostrevor College late in their high schooling career often go unnoticed, Harry struck a chord with both the rest of the peers and the teachers. Despite being the new kid, there were moments where he appeared more comfortable and content than most people in the room; striking up conversations with students young and old, and engaging in friendly banter with the teacher.

As the years went, and my role of helping him integrate into the school had completed, Harry had not only become an established member of our little community, but also a valued friend of mine. Regrettably, we did not share any classes so our interactions were usually brief. But I recall him greeting every one of our conversations with his classic nod and timeless smile. As with everyone in our friend group, he joked, he bantered, he laughed, he got mad when he lost to us in a game of handball, he offered his opinion on whatever controversy that would surround the school at the time, he provided his insight regarding the latest film, song, tv show etc. He was our friend.
Outside the boundaries and restrictions of school is where we realised how mischievous he really was. The kind of young man to stray from the path of a hiking trail to admire the view, the kind to rip off his shirt and jump into a natural miniature waterfall lake, the kind to sneak alongside a bowling alley to try and cheat the game. Harry was a wild spirit, and despite struggling to keep up with him, being around him always transformed an ordinary moment into a memorable one. 2 weeks before he left to go to New Zealand, he was invited to a friend's formal 18th party. Harry was drinking wine, singing, jumping up and down on the dance floor, dancing with the rest of us. I remember, just before I left the party, glancing over and seeing Harry with that age-old grin, puffed out, tired, and yet still engaging in conversation with the rest of the boys. So much had changed, so much time had gone by and yet, he was exactly the same. It was the last time I saw him.
There are no words I can say to console your grief, no words that can define the magnitude of your loss. But I hope you take comfort in knowing that Harry was loved here in Adelaide. When the rest of my friends and I got together recently to discuss the passing of our friend, it was with joy we discovered that we had no bad memories with him. Every moment of reminiscence, every story we shared, was with a smile and a laugh. Harry had touched all our lives with his kindness, affable personality, and signature mischief.

I speak on behalf of my friends that were unable to contact you; he was a good man, and above all else, a good friend. We will treasure his memory for the remainder of our lives.
Rest in peace Harry Ladd.

With utmost sympathy,
Niranjan Srithar

Dear Cathy, Ian and Lilly,
Harry was an outstanding young man. He sat close to my teacher's desk in Religion for the whole of 2018. I affectionately knew him as "Laddy" (which I delivered in a thick Scottish accent - as per Pink Floyd's 'Brick in the Wall'). I can still remember his grin at this, as he was the only boy I used a nickname for. We often had a laugh together and he was always so respectful and positive. The whole Rostrevor College community is reeling at the loss of a real gentleman. May God bless his soul.

To Cathy, Ian and Lilly,

Words fail me, so many years have passed since my time teaching Harry and Lilly however I remember them both so very well. Harry always with a cheeky smile on his face offering up facts about animals/science/transport and being fiercely protective of his friends and Lilly.

I am sending huge love and strength to you all at this time. Harry will never be forgotten and always in our hearts.

Dear Ian, Cathy and Lilly,

I have been numb thinking about what has happened and I just can't bear to think of what you have all gone through.

Harry was so kind and wonderful. He always made me smile. My regret was that I waited so long before I got the nerve to approach Harry. It seemed like everyone knew how much I liked Harry but him.

We had a short time together but they were all good, so I am glad for that. Nobody ever forgets the bonds and friendships of their final year of school and the time I spent with Harry will forever be a part of those memories for me.

With sympathy and great sadness

Dear Harry's Family,

Firstly, I would like to extend my condolences to you all. To say that I was shocked and completely saddened by Harry's passing is an understatement. I've had time to reminisce and think back to our friendship at and outside of Rostrevor, and the many memories and experiences that we shared during the majority of our years there. I will always remember Harry as the kind and carefree friend that you could confide in at any time. His confidence and charisma were just two of the many qualities he displayed. In all honesty, I have never met a friend so selfless and considerate before so far in my life. He was the type of friend that could make you laugh until you cried, but also a friend that supported and lent a hand to you during times of suffering. He never judged anybody and was genuinely a cheerful soul. I found it funny remembering all the times he would come to me for advice regarding girls when I had no experience either, but he really valued other peoples' opinions and ideas. Everything I suggested, he took on board with full interest. I can't ever recall a time when we ever had conflict or tension between us, he was seriously the easiest person anyone could get along with. Despite spending a lot of time together during school as he would filter between groups of friends, we hung out quite a bit outside of school too. A complete social butterfly, he never turned down the opportunity to hang out with anybody.

I remember the first time meeting him was during camp training day in Year 9 when he first started attending Rostrevor. He was the type of person that embodied what you see is what you get in that he didn't have a secret to hide and was open, honest and friendly right from the beginning and was eager to participate. We were assigned to the same camp training program which was mountain biking through hilly and (somewhat) dangerous terrains. During one of the treks, he slipped on his bike and fell over, causing a significant scrape on his leg. Some of us rushed over to see if he was okay, but he just sprung right up and immediately laughed and palmed the whole situation off to his clumsiness. His resilience and positivity radiated all the time and this would be one of the first instances I would see how quick he was at bouncing back from negative situations. Fast-forwarding a bit, I can confidently say January of 2018 was one of my favourite times of my life because I was hanging out with him and our friends a lot during this time. Harry and I often talked about how this was the final month we have to really celebrate our freedom during the holidays, so it was important for us to live it to our fullest. Our hike through Morialta Falls and the ice skating day were among my favourites that we did, because he and I spent a lot of time talking and grew closer as friends than ever before. Harry and I talked about our insecurities and fears, and just generally being real with each other on a deeper note. He never let his fears or insecurities get the better of him though and remained optimistic through any adversity. Formal was another highlight of our friendship, a great night spent together and enjoying the after-party we both attended too. That night is particularly special to me in his memory because we were able to take plenty of photos together and these are mementos I will cherish forever.

In saying that, I've spent time looking at photos of us from memorable occasions and just daily antics at school in Adelaide and thought I would share some of my favourites with you all on the next page.
I hope my photos and memories of Harry contained in this letter, will bring you some comfort.

Rest in Peace Harry Ladd.

Thinking of you all during this difficult time,

Oscar Parente

Dear Harry, Lilly, Ian, Cathy
I have not been equipped to put into words the sadness I felt when I heard about Harry. My up most condolences to his family.
It is with great regret I didn't know Harry later in his life. None the less he was my best friend. For the three years I lived in Dubai, Harry was my best friend for all of it. We experienced so much life together, endless play dates, classrooms, sports fields, school discos, we even shared our 10th birthday party. That period of my life was painted so vividly with his smile, the fastest three years of my life.

In the book I was given when I left the school he wrote "... we will be always be best friends till the end. Nothing now shall ruin our friendship. No one shall stand in our way. I do hope you visit again! From your best friend - Harry"

Harry
I never came back to visit you I was blind to this blessing I was given. It came in the shape of a smiley kiwi and his family. I hope I get to pay you that visit some day. Wherever you are. Love you bud.
