I knew that he was different when he drove his Ford model A to school every day and got out wearing a tux. He was a character.

Grant was one of few people to leave a lasting impression with me.
Grant was fun to be with and I along with a very large number of my party friends in the 1980s through to late 1990s enjoyed his great music and unique company.
I was saddened when I heard of his death as a bright light had gone out.
He was a very special person and it was a privilege and honor to have known him.

Grant - I am at this moment enjoying your album that features songs of Mitchell Parish. This compelled me to google your name - to learn and shocked at your passing.
Within the 15 years livedin Auckland - I so appreciated your 'style' and musical delivery.
I so hope that you are now serenading your current appreciative audience with 'Stairway to the Stars'.

I remember Grant playing his trumpet loudly at the top of Henderson Valley in the dawn of an all night party after School Cert exams at Henderson High. Would have been been 1970/71. Special memories. Good one Grant. Rest in peace.Clive Granger.

Very sad news to hear that Grant has passed away. I had lots of adventures and fun with Grant in West Auckland during the early 70s with "the boys" one of whom has already posted here - Mark MacKay. He was a real charismatic chap was 'chilli' as he was known. It was Grant who first mentioned existentialism to me and the great jazz voice of King Pleasure. Always fond of outrageous antics and new ideas he livened up a gathering with his infectious humour and mischievous sense of fun. And of course, he knew how to entertain even back then. A classic memory was when he became a button salesman. He had a delightful leather satchel with a variety of buttons lined on both side of it. The "boys" present couldn't believe the originality and eccentricity of the caper at the time when he explained his new "career path" to us. But, that summed Grant up perfectly. A real adventurer of the spirit and absolute fun guy to be around. Condolences to his family and friends. A great loss. Old 'westie' Johnnie Walker. UK resident from the late 70s.

I recall first seeing Grant and his band live at a pub in New Plymouth in 1985 or 86. He was dressed up in a tux and had a cane as he belted out "Putting on the Ritz" in front of a small gathering of locals having friday night drinks. I was absolutely mesmerized by this charismatic performance. I never forgot him and followed his career with great interest from then on. He stuck to his music principals his whole career and I admired him for that. Good on him. A sad sad loss to his family and New Zealand.

Memories run deep being your cousin and being a big part of growing up with Aunty Beth's boys... I've always felt proud to be your friend and cousin. All the times you've come along and sung for me at personal events. You have always been such an interesting and loyal friend. To be part of your last journey and seeing the devotion of the beautiful Anna May, Claudia and Charlotte has been inspirational. My love and condolences to your 3 angels. Rest in peace Grant - the universe has welcomed a wonderful new soul.
Will never forget you and your music

My dear, dear friend and musical collegue. Oh so very sad to learn of your departure. My daughters Judith and Alison both emailed me on Wednesday 21st. It hit me like 'A Brick in the Wall'. It seems only a month or so that we spoke on the phone. I had no idea of your illness. Our several years working together as Chilcott & Behrens will forever remain as the finest, happiest experience I was able to share with you. I will never forget you. To your brothers Gavin & Jeffrey and your dear daughters Charlotte and Claudia let me wish you all 'Long Life'
Shalom from Your friend,

Sad to hear of Grant's death. I knew him in Auckland when we were both young, around 20. Lost touch when I moved to the UK. I remember fondly a little road trip to Rotorua we took in a Model A Ford. With no windows if my memory serves. A man of true character and a gentleman. To his family please accept my condolences and best wishes. Mark.

Grant CHILCOTT - nephew of the late Grace & Erin WALKER, ex Whangarata and Clarks Beach. Always the showman - an actor performing skits with Gavin at family gatherings from a very young age. To know Grant was to enjoy him. Kindest thoughts always from Brian (and the late Susie) Walker, Oxford. (our mothers were sisters)

Grant was always the entertainer. Remembered by school friends as "Chilli". He was the one leading school stage productions. Frying eggs on the tarseal on a hot summer's day with partner in fun "Tich" (Brian McDonald). The schoolboy athlete to beat. A great guy, always brought a smile to your face. I have watched proudly as you crooned through time. Thanks for all the fun. Sadly gone too soon. You won't be forgotten. Murray Lane
