Graham WALLACE Obituary

WALLACE, Graham Victor. Passed away on 29 October 2021 at Grace Joel Hospital in his 97th year after a short battle with cancer. Dearly loved and devoted husband of the late Joy for 59 years and much loved and admired father and father-in- law of Linda and Warren and Dene and Anne Marie. Loved Papa of Claire, Jack and Samantha and their partners, Reuben, Sophie and Camille. Special Great Papa to Eleanor and Darcy. Dad had an amazing early life as a veterinarian and was a past president of the NZ Veterinary Association. He later became involved in vaccine production and developed the Multine vaccine still in use after 50 years. Dad was also past president of the Glendowie Bowling Club and Glendowie Probus. He was a very keen traveller, both for business and pleasure and at 90 achieved a solo trip to Alaska to see the glaciers. Dad had an acute mind, optimism and zest for life that was an inspiration to his family and his many friends of all ages. He will be sincerely missed but we are comforted that our Dad wrote his memoir at 93 and it is a lasting legacy which we will always treasure. Special thanks to Meryll and the staff at Grace Joel Hospital for their care of Dad in his last weeks and to Dad's personal doctor, Graeme Washer. Now at peace with his beloved Joy. Due to current restrictions a private family service will be held. All communications to [email protected]

Farewell to the King of the cryptic crosswords. Gentleman Graham it was an honour to have met you and been part of the 7am Kohi coffee community along with the Polar Bears. What special years they were. How you managed to complete those challenging cryptic crosswords amongst all the revelry, interruptions with us coming and going and the chatter was truly amazing. Your intelligence, devotion to your family, integrity and enthusiasm for life will always be remembered by us who were so fortunate to have crossed paths with you. We all loved pulling on our glad rags to attend your book launch. Your book, Vet on the Go, so aptly named will always be treasured.

After years of being Graham's bus buddy at 6am every week day it is hard to say just a few words of memories. I remember just after I met you ,you telling me that once you met Joy she was the only girl for you and after she passed you decided you could sit and feel sorry for yourself or get up and keep your self busy so you caught the 6am bus every morning to Kohi and caught up with your coffee shop mates then walked back to St Heliers and bused up the hill to home.
At 90 you did a solo trip to Alaska, At 92 you climbed the hard path up Mt Manganui( young ones struggle to do this) and at 93 you wrote your memoirs . Even after I retired and shifted to Tauranga you would ring and text me and let me know how our special bus drivers were. My life has been more for knowing you and I wish you safe travels to the love of your life

Dear Linda, Dene & family, wow what a life our dear friend and neighbour Graham has led. We have enjoyed knowing him for some 20+ years. We've enjoyed meals, many a cuppa's and a few sneaky sweet treats as well.
We are so lucky to have shared time with Graham. His memoir is a real treasure and keepsake for us and our two boys.
We will miss his sense of humour and stories immensely.
Thinking of you all at this time.
Vicky, Brett, Dan & Doug Russell
