Dear Gen and family,
Lorna and I would like to offer our condolences to you all.
We grew up in the Databank family and have many fond memories of those days. Gordon always made us feel welcome when we came into the office after school.
I know Dad (Arch ) loved his career and that Databank was his second, if not first, home.
Once we grew up it also became our first employer.
Thinking of you all and sending our love.

Dear Gen,
Our thoughts are with you at the loss of a husband , family man , an inspirational human being.
From the earliest days of Vivian St and Victoria St computer centres, we all knew we had a leader with vision and energy .Ninety hour weeks were almost the norm as a fledgling Databank ( as Gordon christened it) was born.It became a unique World leader in Banking and remained that way for close to twenty years. The advent of new smaller , faster ,and cheaper computers saw the end of Gordon's summation that we operated primarily because of "competitive cooperation" that existed nowhere else in the world of banking. It was an amazing ride.
We can all be proud of his many achievements and of the staff who he supported throughout as the vision grew.
Personally I am grateful for the trust placed in me in a career that provided great satisfaction in several facets of what is now termed 'IT'.
Gen, I had thirty years serving a great system under a great leader and can only offer sincerest condolences to you and Gordon's family at his passing.

Sad to hear of Gordon's passing - a great man, a great presence and a legend of his time. I loved my 9 years working at Databank Systems and feel very lucky to have done so as have many people I have since caught up with over the years - Gordon managed to create that sort of innovation, inspiration and camaraderie amongst all Databank employees. My condolences to Gen and the family - keep your wonderful memories close they will help you through at this very sad time. RIP Gordon

Gordon was instrumental in creating a world leading organisation that certainly has given me a great career. Without their Dunedin presence I would not have started in the industry as a young man nor met my wife of 38 years, Denise who worked there also. On a personal level, that is the impact of the man for me... as I did not have a really personal relationship with him. It is more that I bathed in the sea of opportunity that he created. I am sure he was proud of that legacy...and he deserved to be ! THANKS !

Dear Gen, while we will all miss Gordon in different ways, you and the family have special bonds. I will miss the inspirational leader of banking technology and the leader of all those who worked with/for Gordon at Databank. We had a 'complex' relationship - customer, confident and friend. We had our moments but above all, I witnessed a great leader in action while simultaneously dealing with personal trauma. He encouraged and inspired so many - at all levels of his own business and the related businesses of others.
While we will all miss him, our sense of loss pales into insignificance compared to you and the family. My best wishes to you all. Vale Gordon.

Dear Gen
I am one of the very many people who owe a huge debt to Gordons vision, leadership and capacity to build and sustain the amazing place that was Databank.
I was privileged to be part of the organisation for almost 20 years and will always be grateful for the opportunities, experiences & relationships that developed during my time there.
Deborah and I send our most sincere condolences to you and the family at this time.

I have such fond memories of my 13 years at Databank as Peter Montague mentioned, I was one of the fortunate young people who learnt to believe in herself under Gordon's leadership and that of others around him.
More recently (around 12 years ago) I also had the privilege of working with Gordon when I was setting up a boutique museum for the Bank of New Zealand. As someone who re-shaped the banking industry, Gordon was video'ed in the UK to form part of a display about the Databank phenomenon. He later popped in for a further catch up and to drop off some memorabilia a fond memory.
I remain enormously grateful for the opportunities Gordon and Databank afforded me.
Please accept my deepest sympathy at your loss.

Deepest sympathy to the family. Gordon was visionary and hugely influential on New Zealand IT with many future leaders passing through Databank. I was young and just starting out in my working life, and I will always regard my time there under his leadership as a career highlight.

Dear Gen -
My sympathy to you at this time.
I remember Gordon as the main influence in my working career. He developed a presidential management style - he was the statesman, the futurist, the motivator, the entrepreneur, and the publicist, while leaving the rest of to get on with the job. NBR magazine once described him as an iconoclast, which rather appealed to Gordon.
Kind regards, ..Malcolm Shaw

Dear Gen,
Gordon was a trail blazer, one who re-shaped the banking industry in New Zealand and globally.
He was a wonderful leader, inspirational and entrepreneurial.
It was a privilege to report directly to him. He provided encouragement and always considered what was possible rather than why it wasn't possible.
Catherine and I extend our deepest sympathies to you and the family.

It's a sad day for us all as we remember the leadership that Gordon provided as well as the futuristic thinking. He was well ahead of his time which provoked some jealousy. Let me remind people of the DUX system which Gordon was instrumental in its creation and direction early in the seventies. Today we have Rod Drury producing (in 2010) a copy whose differences are the use of the cloud (instead of the Bank branch) , some add ons (which were also available through DUX) as well as a huge head count for which he gets great credit. However, despite the technical leadership, Gordon's biggest achievement was the development of the large number of people that passed through Databank providing skills to New Zealand and overseas.
He was a man before his time but he significantly contributed to the development of IT in New Zealand.

Dear Gen
I am so fortunate to have been associated with Gordon all those years ago. From 1963 there were many highs and some lows for me but always the same charismatic and forgiving man.
Gordon gave encouragement and scope to so many young people to believe in themselves and to make their mark for the better, in business and in life in general, often in challenging circumstances.
Gordon was truly an inspirational person and his ideas and energy affected businesses and individuals throughout New Zealand in the running of their lives.
Please accept our sincerest condolences and love
