I met Gerald in 1977 at the inaugural symposium of Norm Shealy's American Holistic Medical Association in Wisconisin, and we connected again the next year in San Francisco at an auricular acupuncture program. Between these two meetings we recognized that we had mutual goals in our acupuncture activities and we consequently became good mates. In 1979 he invited me to speak at the New Zealand Medical Acupuncture Society where, for reasons I still cannot understand, he introduced me as "That Rude American Bugger."
Being the senior member in our alliance, Gerald thrust me into -- and often joined me at -- educational, diplomatic, and political activities in Beijing, London, Paris, Milan, and Los Angeles. He included me in his work with World Health Association, World Federation of Acupuncture Societies, and PanPacific Medical Acupuncture Consortium.
Our friendship and love have endured and deepened since our first meeting. We have shared many ideas, techniques, aspirations, meals, stories, and laughs, and could count on the connection to be strong no matter how much time or distance between contacts. American acupuncture, and Joe Helms, have benefited greatly from his generous guidance.
We all know that Gerald was a great man: brilliant, insightful, a skilled and innovative physician, and a good friend. We also all thank Miriam for her exquisitely loving support and participation in everything he did, everywhere he went, and everyone he met. Gerald shall be well remembered and sadly missed, especially by this Rude American Bugger.

I have been enormously blessed to know Gerald and Miriam over the last 30 years and count them as very special friends.
Gerald has been a hugely inspiring and tireless pioneer of bio-energetic medicine and acupuncture. Many of us have been privileged to learn from him through his numerous courses in Auckland and I have greatly appreciated his generosity and wisdom during many meetings at their house. At one of those we initiated the NZ branch of AIMA and he has encouraged me to continue teaching his bio-medicine courses.
I will also miss his enthusiastic mentoring, optimism and kindness. Our love and thoughts are with Miriam and his family, Tim and Julie Ewer
