George DYAS Obituary

DYAS, George Bernard. Born 7th August 1938 and passed away 31st May 2024. Well if your reading this you know I've gone. To my family and friends thanks for the good times. I've surfed, dived, hunted, skied, boated and fished with the best. I've lived my best life. What more could a bloke ask for, it's been a great ride, but now I'm off to the other side to look up some old mates. George, we've checked the wind and the tide, Billy Ho says it's a great fishing day, we'll see you out there. Much loved and adored husband of Flory. Best friend and cherished brother of Phillip, and brother-in-law of Judy. Loved brother-in-law of Fina. Loved brother of Frank and brother-in-law of Lois. Loved uncle of Stephen and Lance. A service will be held at Central Park Chapel of Davis Funerals, 150 Central Park Drive, Henderson, on 5 June at 11am. Followed by a private cremation.

I last communicated with Young George on May 20 to tell him our fishing mate Bernie Preston had passed. He tactfully replied that he was in hospital followed by an emoji that said it all. Bernie, George, Gary Jellie, and self came to Auckland annually to go fishing on Don Robertsons boat. Great times with George's dry humour. Life is so precious and George lived it to the limit. Take care Flory George adored you. RIP my friend.

Dear George,
We´ve been friends & you´ve cut my hair for over 40 years. You may not have noticed that there was a lot less of it to cut these days.
You were a legend in your own lifetime skiing in Canada at 84 years of age. I´m pleased you & Flory enjoyed one last trip to Canada before you left us.
I´m sure the fishing is better & you don´t have to worry about getting the boat in & out of the water now.
I will miss my regular trips to see you.

Good bye George. I have just learnt. I was hoping for a trim today but I guess you have hung up the shears and gone finishing. You started cutting my hair as a 20 something uni student and continued on even when I joined the goldie oldies. As others have noted I learnt a lot more from you than just being on time for a cut!
I have quoted you at legal and regulatory conferences around the world: "When my barber tells me he buys shares in Telecom and Auckland Airport because they are monopolies, why is it so difficult for politicians and competition authorities to understand the need to regulate?"
Thanks for teaching my teenage son Matthew how to communicate with a barber. He is now happy and proud of his sharp looks!
All the best my friend

Farewell Young George. Friend, mentor and exceptional conversationalist for over 35 years.
That framed quote on your salon wall said it all.
"Too bad that all the people who know how to run the country are busy driving taxicabs and cutting hair."
It´s been a privilege and a pleasure knowing you.
Sincere condolences to your family.
