George BUTCHER Obituary

BUTCHER, George William. Lt. Col. MC. ED 207544 Korea. Peacefully on Sunday 16th September 2018 at Whakatane Hospital; aged 91. Dearly loved husband of the late Barbara. Former husband of Shirley May (Tauranga). Loved elder brother and brother inlaw of Barry and Joan (Auckland), David and Amanda (NSW). Much loved and respected father and father inlaw of Michael and Suzy (Opotiki), Collette and John Leenman (Thames), Lesley and Brandon Sparrow (Collingwood), Liz and Stephen Carter (Opotiki), Jo and James Falloon (Masterton), David and Anna Jones (Tora). Very proud grandad of Rob and Marina, James, Anya, Jakob, Lucas, Tessa, Claire, Richard, Willie, Sarah and Kate. One of life's true gentleman. A funeral service for George will be held in the St Matthews Anglican Church, 37 Church Street, Masterton on Friday 21st September at 10:30am followed by burial in the Returned Services Section of the Riverside Cemetery, River Road, Masterton. A memorial service will be held in the Hiona St Stephen's Anglican Church, Church Street, Opotiki on Monday 24th September at 1pm. We fondly remember George and Barb for their wonderful hospitality, warmth and friendship to the Wellington Hospital ED Nurses and their families.
George was a great guy, always had time for people, humble and very wise.

I knew George during the 1970s when he made significant contributions to railway bridge design in NZ. He was an expert in structural steel design who we were always prepared to consult. One of "Life's true gentlemen" is how I remember him, an engineer of the utmost integrity. Rest in peace, George. Dave Belz
