11 years Gavin's junior, and growing up in Paekakariki its fair to say he was probably my first sporting idol. Trying to match that giant stride on the beach, seeing him pushing the milk trolley, and running with him at harriers. Many fond memories,R I P Gavin, condolences to the family.

Heather and family
Dot joins me in sending sympathy and condolences following Gavin´s passing.
We were able to watch the live stream of the funeral service and heartened at the wonderful tributes that everyone made.
It was a fantastic demonstration of the love and respect that envelops your family and which you and Gavin can have great pride in leaving as your legacy.
He will remain in my memory as a very pleasant and capable person with extraordinary running talent and love for family.
With best wishes
Peter and Dot

To Heather and family
I remember Gavin answered an ad we put on the local radio for volunteers for Kapiti Special Olympics and he came on board and gave his time and leadership to the club for many years. A lovely man. He will be missed by many .

For Heather and family,
I have many good memories of Gavin as he rose through the ranks of athletics and harriers finally achieving what other runners only dream about.
THE OLYMPICS.
I was part of a group of harriers from Wellington who on Sunday mornings, leading up to the Wellington champs, would travel to Queen Elizabeth Park to train. We would meet up with Gavin and have a good work out.
Gavin and Kapiti Harriers promoted a race/relay in Paekakariki . We loved to participate in this event many times over the years.
Gavin's father was always there helping.
I also recall Gavin's brothers in the sport.
My sympathy to Heather and family. Gavin will be missed very much.

Gavin, my memories of you are of someone clever, thoughtful, practical and kind. Unassuming, just showing up to help, generous with your time. And seeing you with your grandsons made my heart happy. I am grateful to have known you.
Heather, Clare, Raymond and Juliet and the children - may you comfort each other and take courage from your good memories.
With love,
Adrienne

Our deepest sympathy to Heather and family.
Gavin and Heather were so welcoming to NZ and Kapiti Harriers to us as new arrivals from England. Gavin was such a modest and kind man especially for someone who had reached the top level of athletics. One of life's gentlemen.

We'll remember Gavin as a great human being with attributes that were worth sharing - gentlemanly, kind, generous and talented. He will leave a big hole in the Thorley family but fill it with amazing memories.
Lindsay's parting comment is that he will always remember those skinny legs from behind in races!

Deepest sympathy and much sadness at the loss of dear, kind Gavin! But happy memories of a visit to my home in Munich, when we took a walk around the Olympic Stadium, where he took part in the Games in 1972. I loved his enthusiasm for architecture and art, and his commitment to inspiring teenagers to run in the Special Olympics. Gavin was such a special person and will be very much missed by many!

Gavin was incredibly courteous, generous and kind and if everyone had even a fraction of his qualities the world would be a much better place
